01 – Tasto Atellano

The Luzzano Castle and Leonardo’s Vineyard are linked by a double-thread thanks to the Atellani family. The castle, in fact, was once their estate and our host Piero Portaluppi restored it at the beginning of the 20th Century. It is a story of selected affinities that are reflected in the creation of the wine ‘Tasto Atellano’, Leonardo da Vinci’s Malvasia Aromatica. The Luzzano Castle is a historical wine-producing company based between Oltrepo Pavese and the area surrounding Piacenza. Giovanella Fugazza, current owner of the castle, gives great importance to local wine variety, Malvasia Aromatica. From these grapes, the two Tasto Atellano wines are created. It was here that the Atellani family owned their fief in the 16th century and the same family of the Atellani House in Milan, where you can visit Leonardo’s orchard and the recently re-planted Malvasia Vineyard. Piero Portaluppi was the architect who restored the Atellani House in the 40’s and who was appointed, in the same period, by the Fugazza family, to restore the Luzzano Castle, which is now a charming, modern residence.
